Does Explorer replace illegal characters?

Illegal characters are replaced by the corresponding Unicode character. For example, the character # is replaced by U+0023.

Note: the rationale for using Unicode characters instead of a simple replacement character like an underscore _ is to avoid unintentional data loss when two different files have the same names apart from an illegal character at the same position in the name.
